“ Nah! My dog wags its tail because dogs wag their tails. And I say, ‘There's an error on the board...’
And there is always an error on the board. ” — J.M. Ernst K.G. Stückelberg [as told to TH by J.E. Wess]
The working title “Quantum Gravitas” was rhyming with the Latin proverb “In aqua sanitas, in vino veritas,” to which the Germans add “ Im Beer ist auch Etwas.” —
Similarly, the lede paragraph of Chapter 1, explaining the last word in the title of Part I, used to end: “The last-word substitution indicates our own unwillingness to apologize for being right, the omission of Hardy’s personal possessive apostrophe indicating a collective manifesto.” Then, referees happened, and ...the book saw ink as you read it; “eppur si muove,” as Galileo would say, sotto voce.
Notation: “p.n” = page n,
“P.n” = paragraph n,
“l.n” = line n,
“S.m.n” = section n of chapter m;
n > 0 is counted downward/forward,
n < 0 upward/backward on the page or within the containing part.
If you notice any kind of error in the book, please, do let us know!
